Purpose and boundary

This guide helps an overseas patient and family organise questions about visits, bedside companions and overnight arrangements. It is an administrative checklist, not a promise that any person may enter a ward, sleep on site, receive a bed or remain after visiting hours.

ChinaCareAccess can coordinate a written request, while the hospital, ward, accommodation provider and relevant authority set their own rules. Policies may differ by department, patient condition, infection-control situation and facility capacity, so obtain a current written answer from the responsible institution.

Confirm the institution policy

Ask for the current policy covering visiting hours, frequency, visitor numbers, entry points, restricted departments, required passes, identity documents, screening and the process for a late or changed visit. Record the ward, policy date, answer owner and what happens outside the stated hours.

Beijing health guidance says institutions should set clear visiting times and frequencies, manage them dynamically during high-risk periods and apply stricter limits in intensive, neonatal, transplant and other special departments. Use that as a question prompt, not as a substitute for the individual institution's notice.

Register the right people

Separate three roles in your notes: a short-term visitor, a companion authorised to support the patient, and a person seeking overnight accommodation. Ask what identity document, relationship information, consent or pass is needed for each role, and whether a change requires a new registration or handover.

Official local rules commonly require visitor or companion registration and identification, but the exact fields and retention period belong to the facility. Share only the minimum information requested through the official channel; do not put passport scans, full health records or another patient's details in a public message.

Clarify overnight and accommodation

Ask directly whether overnight companionship is permitted for this ward and date, whether a clinician's order or patient condition is relevant, how many companions are allowed, where a permitted person may rest, and what check-in, badge, safety and departure procedures apply. Never treat a request for overnight access as approval.

If on-site overnight support is unavailable, ask for the institution's documented alternatives: a nearby hotel, an approved non-medical support service, a daytime companion rota or a video check-in. Accommodation rules and hospital access are separate decisions, so confirm both and keep their written terms together.

Protect privacy and define language help

Ask the patient what may be shared, with whom and in which setting. Visitors should not read charts, photograph other patients, discuss another person's condition or enter treatment areas without permission. A companion supports practical needs; that role does not confer consent or authority to make clinical decisions.

A translator or interpreter can support communication when the parties agree, but should not invent a clinical explanation, sign consent without authority or handle private records beyond the agreed purpose. The UK Government notes that embassy communication help is not formal medical translation, so confirm the qualified language service and document scope with the institution.

Prepare children and change plans

Ask specifically about children: minimum age, number of visitors, infection screening, supervision, waiting areas and whether a video visit is available. Local hospital rules may restrict preschool children or limit visitors, so do not assume a child can enter a ward simply because the patient is a relative.

Before travel, write a fallback sequence for a closed ward, a missed time slot, a changed condition or a declined overnight request: contact the named ward office, use an approved video visit, arrange external accommodation or rotate an authorised adult. ChinaCareAccess can help phrase the minimum non-sensitive request, but cannot override the institution's decision.
